Samuel “Joe” Douglas Mackey, Jr., age 63, a lifelong resident of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on January 9, 2022, at St. Vincent’s Riverside Center for Caring with his loving family by his side. Joe was born in Jacksonville, Florida on June 16, 1958, to the late Samuel Douglas Mackey, Sr., and Joyce Ann Kristof Mackey. While attending Terry Parker High School, Joe worked at CSX until he graduated in 1977. He then pursued a career with JTA as a bus driver. In the mid 1980’s, Joe met the love of his life, Kathryn Johnston, and they were happily married on May 6, 1989. Joe was a devoted husband, loving father, son, brother, and friend who loved his family dearly. He was an amazing provider, was hardworking and always had more than one job. Joe was also very family oriented and had a passion about being an active father, teaching and leading his daughters. He coached and umpired his girls for years and even drove their school bus throughout their elementary and middle school years. Joe was very successful in his career; he drove for JTA from 1985 until 2000, then was a school bus driver for the family business, Mackey Bus Services, from 2001 until 2008, worked at Granger delivering doors for new constructions for a few years, and finally worked at CSC as a security guard for many local events, concerts, and football games. When not working, Joe was cheering on the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Florida Gators, but WWE was a weekly must as he really enjoyed wrestling. Joe also enjoyed being outdoors, fishing at the lake, and most of all, spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lois Shortridge. Joe is survived by his loving wife 32 years, Kathy Mackey of Jacksonville, FL; daughters, Haley Mackey of Jacksonville, FL, and Kimberly (Travis) Duncan of Starke, FL; sister, Debra (Bryan) Pennington of Middleburg, FL; his furball grandpups; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
