Jansen – Nina Hawkins Jansen October 14,1936 – July 25, 2021 Nina passed away at St. Vincent’s Hospital from complications of the Covid Virus. Nina graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1954 and the University of Florida with a degree in English in 1958. She began her teaching career at the newly opened Englewood High School where she sponsored the state awarded honors newspaper, The Rampage. After taking time off to have her first child she returned to teaching at Arlington Junior High School. She was quickly recruited to the new Fort Caroline Junior High School where she taught honors English and became English department chair. After several years she was again persuaded to transfer to Terry Parker Senior High School as English department chair and taught honors English 11th grade for 12 years. Ironically, and despite her accolades as an English teacher, Nina often said she felt being selected as a majorette in the Jackson High School band was her most memorable accomplishment. Nina is survived by her husband of 67 years, Carl Jansen; daughter, Christine (Jeff) Copeland; three grandchildren, Lauren, Matthew and Melissa Copeland. A Memorial Service will be held on August 16, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Cummings Chapel at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral with Father G. Alexander officiating. Burial will be in the Bishop’s Garden at the Cathedral. Those in attendance are requested to wear masks as protection against the virus. The arrangements are under the care and direction of V.
