Kelly – Maxie “Wendell” Kelly, age 83, of Lawtey, Florida passed away on October 10, 2020 at the Custead Care Center in Orange Park, Florida. Wendell was born in his home in Lawtey, Florida on July 6, 1937 to the late Hermie C. Kelly and Eunice Whitehead Kelly. Wendell became a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Lawtey, Florida in 1946. He thoroughly enjoyed attending, worshipping his Lord and Savior, and playing piano at church. Wendell graduated from Bradford High School in 1955 and started working for Kelly’s Grocery, a family grocery store in Lawtey. While working, he attended Florida Southern College where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1959 and later pursued his Master’s degree from the University of Florida in the late 1960’s. Wendell enjoyed many careers throughout his life. He worked at the Florida State Prison in the Classification Department as a Classifications Supervisor as well as at Delatins as an Insurance Agent selling Gulf Life Insurance. He then became a teacher for the Bradford High School from 1966-1969. Wendell’s last career was at Glades Correctional Institute where he taught school, was the Education Program Manager, Counselor, and then their Classification Supervisor. Wendell retired after 20 years of dedicated service in the corrections field. He married the love of his life, Virginia Ruth Saunders, on May 27, 1973. Wendell will always be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather who loved his family dearly. Wendell enjoyed collecting coins and stamps, reading, playing crossword puzzles, and being active in the Elks Lodge in Green Cove Springs where he was a longtime member. More than anything, Wendell loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 36 years, Virginia Ruth Kelly; daughter, Kathy Arnold; grandson, Stan Arnold, Jr.; and brother, John David Kelly. Wendell is survived by his loving children, Jeff (Debora) Cain of Fairfax, VA, Belinda (Bryan) Massey of Cleveland, GA, and Virginia (Kenneth) Warner of Lawtey, FL; his grandchildren, Jaclyn (Jason), Christina, Stephanie (Sean), Johnathan (Marnie), Stephen (Kristi), Ryan (Sarah), Daniel (Becky), Jeffrey (Niki), and Barron; and 17 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Wendell’s Life will be held on Friday, October 16, 2020 at 11:00 am at Grace United Methodist Church in Lawtey, FL with Pastor Sheron Willson officiating. Interment will follow at New River Baptist Church Cemetery in Brooker, FL. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 15, 2020 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at Archie Tanner Memorial Chapel in Starke, Florida as well as on Friday, October 16, 2020 from 10:00 – 11:00 am at Grace United Methodist Church.
