Chief Jimmy Epps, age 81, of Starke, Florida passed away on September 26, 2021, at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, FL. He was born on October 5, 1939, to the late Elmer Epps and Marie Chambers Epps. Chief Jimmy spent his adolescence back and forth between Arkansas and Starke, FL. He attended a high school in Arkansas and enlisted in the United States Air Force while he was still attending school. Chief Jimmy proudly served his country in the Air Force for 20 years. He spent three tours in Vietnam and received multiple Bronze Star and Purple Hearts before retiring. The day he retired from the military Chief Jimmy wasted no time and started his first shift patrolling for the Starke Police Department. He spent several years working for the Starke Police Department and then moved over to the city purchasing department. On May 8th, 1978, Jimmy married the love of his life Martha Long Epps and together they spent 43 wonderful years. During this time of life Chief Jimmy was figuring out his true life calling. He enjoyed being an agent at Liberty National Insurance Company and being a car salesman at Terwillegar Ford. In 1989, Chief Jimmy figured out his true calling and was elected Chief of Police at the Starke Police Department where he proudly served his city from 1989-2001. Chief Jimmy was a member of Heilbronn Baptist church where he enjoyed attending and serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was an avid Florida State football fan and enjoyed playing golf in his free time; he was also a pro Tiger Woods golfer on the play station. Chief Jimmy and Martha purchased a motor home which became their favorite hobby together, they traveled all over the United States. Chief Jimmy was an active member of the Masons and the Shriners. His favorite season was election season, he had a true passion for local politics and loved making his phone calls, letting folks know what needed to be done. More than anything, Chief Jimmy loved his family and will be missed by all who knew him. He was proceeded in death by parents; son, Steve Epps; brothers, Bill Epps and Harold Epps, sister, Helen Epps; and granddaughter, Courtney Epps. Chief Jimmy is survived by his loving wife, Martha Long Epps of Starke, FL; children, Mark (Myla) Epps of Milner, GA, Shawna Blom of Starke, FL and Shae (Carl Alvstad) Epps of Green Cove Springs, FL; brother, Tommy Epps; grandchildren; Harrison, Madison, Megan, Samantha, Jordie, Steve Jr.; great granddaughters, Cameran and Reagan. A Celebration of Chief Jimmy’s life will be held on Thursday, September 30, 2021, at 12:00 PM at Heilbronn Baptist Church where military honors will be rendered, and Pastor Danny Boyd will be officiating. Interment will follow at Crosby Lake Cemetery. The family will receive friends and hour prior to the service at the church.
